Counting Butterflies

How do you count butterflies? Why one at a time, of course! In the past week or so, volunteers and PPL staff have been busy tallying numbers and species of butterflies as part of a nationwide effort to get a snapshot of population numbers and ranges. This is an annual event known as the 4th of July Butterfly Count because counts fall within a few days either side of Independence Day. High temperatures have been a problem only for the butterfly counters. Butterflies seem to thrive on hot temperatures.  Holtwood, Susquehanna Riverlands and Montour Preserve hosted butterfly counts. Observations from the counts go to the North American Butterfly Association. The data are analyzed to examine population trends and compared with information from previous year’s counts.
