On Friday, Alana Roberts, PPL Community Affairs Specialist headed to Luzerne county to meet with students and teachers from Solomon Plains Elementary in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District to present a $2,000 check for their successful Empowering Educators grant request.

Sixth grade students will build a solar powered kiln that will dry iron hydroxide, a bright orange pollutant that accumulates in several local streams affected by abandoned mine drainage. With technical assistance from a regional nonprofit organization, Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine drainage (EPCAMR), the material will ultimately be used in the school for various art projects.
