Summer Light Show

Long exposure captured a firefly flash.

Many of us remember catching lightning bugs or fireflies as kids, putting them in a jar and watching them flash. Although firefly numbers are decreasing, you can still see this summer light show from June through August in a grassy field. As dusk settles, fireflies begin lighting the night. Each different species has its own flash rate and flight pattern. It’ s fun to just sit and watch, but if you want to get involved in a nationwide survey of fireflies or just want to learn more about them, go to: www.mos.org/fireflywatch/. Male fireflies take to the air to advertise to a female down in the grass or perched among nearby shrubs. If interested in a male, she flashes back.
