Dragonflies patrol pond and lakeshores in the summer sun, feeding on insects as they dart here and there on powerful and often colorful wings. Ranging in colors from browns to oranges and reds to blacks, blues and greens, dragonflies can be dull in hue or a shiny, metallic color. Dragonflies are helpful insects, catching and eating other insects like mosquitoes. In fact, one nickname for them is mosquito hawks.
