Hey, that leaf is ALIVE! …

Lovely Luna moth at night

…or at least it appeared so. Upon further investigation, I recognized the delicate, pale green wings as the distinguishing features of a Luna moth. They even have scary looking eyespots on the wings to trick any potential predators. Not surprisingly, I saw this lovely moth last evening on a patio lit by an overhead flood light. With a wingspan that approaches 4 inches, it was hard to miss!

This species relies on host trees like white birch, persimmon, various hickories, walnuts and sumacs in order to complete a successful life-cycle. Although Luna moths are somewhat common around here, the adults only live for about a week, so enjoy it if you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse.
