Get your hands dirty!

A student helps with an ear tag for the black bear.

What better way to learn about the environment than digging right in with a hands-on experience? The county conservation districts organize the Envirothon competitions every year and many of them are hosted at the PPL preserves. The Pike-Wayne Envirothon took place at the PPL Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center today, with over 60 students eager to test their knowledge on soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and a current issue. The students got a special treat when local Wildlife Conservation Officers from the PA Game Commission stopped by with a tranquilized black bear. This bear was getting into some local dumpsters, so it will be safely relocated to a more suitable habitat. What a terrific day for experiential learning!
