Fishing for Fun in the Riverlands

More than 70 participants lined the shores of PPL Susquehanna Riverland’s Lake Took-A-While on Saturday for Family Fishing Education Day.

The program, designed by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and sponsored by the Columbia County Bassmasters, is intended to teach kids the joy of fishing and bring families together through outdoor activities. PFBC provided instruction and free equipment, while Bassmasters provided bait, prizes and food for the kids and their families. PPL and Riverlands staff provided support for the event.

Kids rotated through stations for instruction on casting, knot-tying and fishing regulations before being turned loose on the lake with rod and reel in hand.

Family Fishing Education Day is a way to ensure that not only is the next generation introduced to fishing as a form of recreation, but they learn about it in a way that engenders a love of the outdoors and a sense of the responsibility for stewardship of that wild part of our world.

Judging by the happy looks on the faces of some of the kids leaving, it was a pretty successful day.
