A sign of spring

spring-2009-062Small vernal ponds act as nurseries for wood frogs, which lay between 2,000 to 3,000 eggs and quickly leave the breeding site. The black eggs seen here are encased in a clear, jelly mass and anchored to the plants just below the surface.
